QU | Outdoor lighting for a villa in Dalmatia

Project by Parisotto+Formenton & Partners

The Adriatic archipelagos of Istria and Dalmatia are home to numerous Robinson Houses, former fishermen’s homes now restored as holiday homes. One of these, located on a small island in Kvarner Bay accessible only by sea, was recently renovated by Parisotto+Formenton & Partners for a private client who has used it for generations as a family summer retreat.

The house overlooks the gulf and exists in close connection with the surrounding landscape: the sea, Mediterranean vegetation, and outdoor spaces punctuate daily life and are the heart of life during the summer. The renovation project was guided by profound respect for the context and the character of the original architecture, a simple fisherman’s house built after World War II.

The constraints imposed by local regulations—from maintaining the openings to the use of traditional materials and tiled roofs—were interpreted as design opportunities. The existing volumes have been preserved and enhanced, creating a complex that includes an annex and opens onto the terraces, garden, and pool—the most lived-in spaces of the property.

The architectural and interior design language combines contemporary simplicity with Mediterranean authenticity, through a selection of natural materials and Italian and Nordic designer furnishings that engage with the character of the location.

Light as an element of landscape integration

In a project where nature, the sea, and natural light are the absolute protagonists, artificial lighting plays a particularly delicate role. The residence enjoys the extraordinary luminosity typical of the Mediterranean coast, and the lighting project was designed to accompany the transition from day to night without altering the atmosphere.

The outdoor lighting by QU interprets this requirement through a discreet yet highly technical language. The Cyrano, Brillo and Magritte lighting fixtures were selected for their ability to harmoniously integrate with the greenery and open spaces, offering high performance, quality lighting, and a contemporary technical-decorative design.

The choice of QU products was guided by the desire to integrate light into the landscape with solutions capable of ensuring high technical performance and refined lighting quality, without sacrificing an aesthetic consistent with the essential simplicity of the Mediterranean residence. The finishes also helped make the fixtures an integral part of the project.

In keeping with the Parisotto+Formenton & Partners approach, the lighting elements were inserted with great attention to stylistic continuity between architecture, nature, furnishings, and technical details. The light does not impose itself as an independent presence, but interacts with the context and amplifies its perceptive qualities.

At sunset, when natural light gives way to the more intimate dimension of the home, QU products contribute to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Pathways, convivial areas, terraces, and the garden are complemented by measured lighting that enhances the vegetation and architecture without overpowering them. A discreet presence that adds poetry and comfort to outdoor spaces, designed for relaxation and sharing after the day’s activities.

In this project, artificial lighting draws on the legacy of Mediterranean natural light, accompanying outdoor life in the evening hours and contributing to an authentic, elegant experience deeply rooted in the place.
